Purbeck Mining Museum next opening days

Purbeck Mining Museum will be open on Saturdays and Sundays only throughout October, with the exception of the school half-term holiday week commencing on the Monday 28th October to Friday 1st November. We are open on these days from 11:00 – 16:00; last entry 15:30.

The last opening day of the museum this year will be Sunday 3rd November 2024. The Museum will remain closed throughout the winter until Spring 2025 – Detailed opening dates and days will be advertised in January

Meet the miner Sundays!

Every Sunday in October (and Wednesday 30th), former clay miner Brian Biles, will be at Purbeck Mining Museum answering your questions about what life was like underground in the 1960’s.
Come and chat to Brian between 11:00 and 15:30 in the Purbeck Mining Museum Transhipment Building.

PMMM (Purbeck & Mining Museum)The Purbeck Mining Museum is dedicated to the history and heritage of Purbeck Ball Clay mining and its industrial narrow gauge railways.

Visit us to find out more about the history of clay mining in Purbeck and learn about the experience of miners and their families.

New for 2024:  Thanks to work by our volunteers over the winter, we’re now able to invite visitors to experience what it was like inside a typical Purbeck clay mine.  Visit us to view the underground tunnel.

Entry is FREE. Please consider a donation of at least £2 for each adult visitor, this will help us to care for, explore and celebrate your heritage.  Donations in cash or by contactless payment are welcome.

Children’s activities

Children’s activity trail – follow the clues to be a Clay Mine Super Sleuth.  Suitable for ages 9 – 13.

Count the Norden Nippers – how many of our little mining friends can you find hidden in the museum?  Suitable for all ages.
